Founder of OLIVE MEMORIAL ECCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (OMERINS), Dr. M. Massey, has been a teacher and educational administrator for past more than 40 years and grasped the problem identified by the All India Survey on preschool education, which pointed out that the biggest deficiency in imparting quality preschool education lies in the fact that well qualified teachers in the modern research based pedagogical tools and technology are in acute short supply in the country and to remedy it, academicians from the field of higher education must get involved in creating such facility. He decided to contribute as a resource and up-dated himself by pursuing Post-Graduate Diploma in ‘Early Child Care and Education’, which tells about his passion and enthusiasm in the work he has undertaken.

He has experience of establishing a B. Ed. Teachers’ Training Center and his experience tells that a Teachers’ Training center with an attached Model School for Practice of Teaching provides an ideal environment for providing a good, practice based, Teachers’ Training.

Therefore, our Preschool Teachers’ Training Institute is housed in the premises of the ST. MARK’S INTERNATIONAL PRESCHOOL and will draw academic support and teacher tutors from the members connected with OLIVE MEMORIAL ECCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, thereby utilizing expertise and experience of academicians drawn from the field of Higher Education and brought together on this platform by Dr. Massey, himself from the field of Higher Education. This way, we are pursuing the line of action suggested by the All India Survey on Preschool Education conducted by Ambedkar University in collaboration with NCTE.

Our emphasis will be on practical training in the form of compulsory Practice of Teaching component, in line with the guidelines provided by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

INTRODUCTION - With an aim to empower girls through skill-development, ST. MARK'S PRESCHOOL TEACHERS' TRAINING INSTITUTE (SMPTTI) offers skill-based programs under seal and certification of ST. XAVIER CHRISTIAN SOCIETY, registered with Government of Uttar Pradesh ( Registration No. 1729/1789-90) and empowered to grant NSQF Level 4 Certificate/Diploma as per courses designed by NCERT and Department of Skill Development/NIOS (under process), and are valid all over the country.

These courses will prepare you for Supervisory and Assistant Teacher/Teacher level positions at Pre-school level with present salaries around Rs. 10,000/= to Rs. 25,000/=, depending on proficiency gained.

COURSES OFFERED BY THE INSTITUTE

While the Institute focuses on providing Pre-school Teachers’ Training Programme in English Medium to girls only, it is a fact that many aspiring candidates may not be having the required level of fluency in Spoken English. Also, basic knowledge of computers is a must for Teacher Trainees. So, the Institute has designed to short term courses in "Spoken English" and another in "Computers Applications" also.

The three skill-based courses on offer are –

            A. PRESCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM (For aspiring teachers)

            B. SPOKEN ENGLISH COURSE (For all)

            C. COMPUTER APPLICATION COURSE (For all)

• Facility of joining any/both courses ( i.e. Computer Programming Course and/or Spoken English course) are launched to enable Teacher candidates lacking skills of SPOKEN ENGLISH and/or COMPUTERS, as these are pre-requisites of Teachers’ Training Course.  But, EVEN THOSE GIRLS  WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THESE COURSES CAN JOIN.

C. COMPUTER APPLICATION COURSE 

NOTES:

• All the Courses being offered are only for girls.
• These programmes are credit based programmes with entry-exit facilities i.e. On completing CPSE/ACPSE, if the candidate wants to do ACPSE/DPSE  respectively, then they can seek admission in ACPE/DPSE by paying a balance amount and complete the course in 6 months/1 year, taking advantage of the credits earned.
• Courses are offered only in English Medium.  As such, a level of fluency in spoken English is a prior requirement. However, those who are not having the required fluency in Spoken English, can get enrolled in a 3-month “SPOKEN ENGLISH” Course offered by the Institute first to gain required proficiency.
• Additionally, teacher candidates are also expected to know the “Computer Programming Course” to learn tools of Online Education. Candidates having no knowledge of computers can also opt for a Computer Programming course, which covers the fundamentals of computers and programming. This course is designed for beginners and helps in building a strong foundation in programming concepts.

  Curriculum of Preschool Teacher Education

    Pre-school Teachers’ Training Programs are designed to integrate the study of childhood, social context of education, subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, aims of education, and communication skills. 

        The curriculum constitutes three broad components

 (a) Theory courses, supplemented with practical content;

(b) Practicum i.e. self-learning/ development; and 

(c) School internship, i.e. engagement with children in preschool. 

The Theory and Practicum course are assigned a weightage in proportion as per duration of course, maintaining equal ratio between the theory component on one hand and practicum and internship on the other. 

1. a) Theory Courses

The theory courses are generally categorized as Foundation Courses and Content and Pedagogy Courses keeping in view the integration and balance of understanding of child and child development from a psychological and sociological perspective, and a sound understanding of knowledge of pedagogy of language, mathematics and environmental studies along the early childhood continuum. 

The Foundation Course shall broadly include:

1. Early Childhood Care and Education in India

2. Understanding Child and Childhood

3. Health and Nutrition of the Child

4. Gender, Diversity and Discrimination.

The Content and Pedagogy Courses shall broadly include

1. Preschool Education Curriculum: Principles and priorities

2. Methods and Materials for Preschool Education

3. Development of Mathematical Concepts in Children

4. Development of Language and Literacy in Children

5. Developing understanding of Environment

6. Planning and Organizing a Preschool Programme

7. Working with Children of Special Needs

8. Working with Parents and Communities

1. b).Practicum

Each theory course shall have associated practicals. Practicals with theory classes aim at enabling student-teachers to: (a) internalize or understand theory better through linking it with field situation, and (b) develop appropriate pedagogical competencies and skills. Activities supplementing theory may include observing children/families/institutions: doing case studies; creating and practicing use of teaching-learning materials, aids and activity plans; planning and conducting activities related to different developmental and subject domains; and planning and designing continuing and comprehensive evaluation.

School Internship

This is envisaged as a three stage process: 

Stage 1 : Observation of Preschool classes in different settings; 

Stage 2 : Planning practice of teaching in preschool classes for part of the day; and

Stage 3 : Fulltime internship or immersion in preschool

For good training of teachers at preschool stage, involvement in practical training consisting of practice of teaching in real classroom environment is an essential requirement. This requirement will be fulfilled by our attached model preschool – St. Mark’s International School- in Kalindipuram, Prayagraj.
